Winters is a city in Runnels County, TX. Located 42 miles south of Abilene and 52 miles northeast of San Angelo, Winters lies at the junction of U.S. Highway 83 and Farm Roads 53 and 1770 in north-central Runnels County. With a population of 2,562, Winters has a total area of 2.9 square miles, of which about 20% is covered with water.

Named after a local rancher John N. Winters, Winters was founded in 1880 and was incorporated in 1909. The same year a cottonseed mill opened in the area that helped shape the economy of the community. With over a hundred thriving businesses, the Winters of today offers commercial and distribution services for a vast agricultural and ranching area.

Winters is served public education by the Winters Independent School District. The Winters High School, Junior School and Elementary School do not only dispense knowledge and education, they offer many extracurricular activities to keep the youth healthy and active. Their baseball and softball programs as well as the Blizzard Basketball team keep the community engaged and entertained.

The Z.I Hale Museum is the cultural hub of the town. It offers exhibits of Winter’s history. Photographs and documents help the residents and visitors relive the history of this Texan town. Parks like Winters City Park and Elm Creek Reservoir offer many recreational activities. Play areas for kids, swimming pools, camping sites, hiking and walking trails, shooting sports arenas, fishing opportunities are among the many activities that can be accessed in the parks.

On average, Winters gets 24 inches of rain every year and only an inch of snow. The temperature can rise as high as 95 degrees in the summer, leaving no choice but to install a reliable air conditioner at home.
